Silver amalgam (an alloy that has around 50% mercury and also
silver, tin, copper and zinc) has been used for approximately
160 years for the restoration of teeth and has been very useful particularly before the advent of modern white fillings and ceramic restorations.
Silver
amalgam is an unsightly material that can corrode and expand
over time. The
expansion can further weaken a tooth that has been
heavily filled and this can then lead to Cracked Tooth Syndrome.
In some Scandinavian countries the use of silver amalgam has been
banned particularly pregnant women and children. A very small percentage
of people in the overall population may be allergic to silver
amalgam/mercury fillings.
With
the use of highly advanced, durable and aesthetic resin and porcelain
materials that are now available, silver amalgam fillings are
not used as often as they once used to be.
At enhancedental
we choose never to use silver amalgam (mercury).
