Silver amalgam (an alloy that has around 50% mercury and also
silver, tin, copper and zinc) has been used for approximately
160 years for the restoration of teeth.
Silver
amalgam is an unsightly material that will corrode, chip and expand
over time. The mercury will expand and contract just like it does
in a thermometer when the temperature changes occur in the mouth
with hot and cold food/drink.
The
expansion/contraction can further weaken a tooth that has been
heavily filled and can then lead to Cracked Tooth Syndrome. Use
of mercury in the body has been criticized by many civilised countries
but amalgam is still used in many dental practices in Australia.
In some Scandinavian countries the use of silver amalgam has been
banned particularly pregnant women and children. Some reports
claim that silver amalgam fillings may potentially be associated
with conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. Also a small percentage
of people in the overall population may be allergic to silver
amalgam/mercury fillings.
With
the use of highly advanced, durable and aesthetic resin and porcelain
materials that are now available, silver amalgam fillings are
certainly not necessary like they once used to be.
At enhancedental
we choose never to use silver amalgam (mercury).
